What to see in Manresa

Must-sees

Manresa is the capital of the Bages, in the heart of central Catalonia, and its skyline is defined by the basilica of La Seu, a large Gothic church built on the Puig Cardener hill. At its foot, the Pont Vell crosses the river Cardener and offers one of the best views of the city. The old town keeps medieval streets such as the Carrer del Balç, a covered stretch you can visit with an interpretation centre, and several Modernista buildings.

The other big visit is the Cave of Saint Ignatius, where Ignatius of Loyola spent a period of retreat and wrote part of his Spiritual Exercises; today it is part of a Baroque sanctuary. The Museu de Manresa is also worth seeing, as is the walk along the Sèquia, a medieval canal that brought water from the Llobregat to the city and can be followed on foot or by bike.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no fixed free walking tours in Manresa, but there are several organised activities. There are guided visits of the old town and La Seu, tickets to a city museum, visits to a local winery with a tasting of Pla de Bages wines and balloon flights over the area, with Montserrat in the background. The tourist office has information on visits to the Cave of Saint Ignatius.

How long to spend

Allow a day for the old town, La Seu and the Cave of Saint Ignatius. If you add the Sèquia route or a winery, two days is better. Montserrat is less than half an hour away by car and is an almost obligatory trip if you stay an extra day.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in the centre, between the old town and the Passeig de Pere III, from where everything is within walking distance and there are restaurants nearby. If you prefer the countryside, the Bages has farmhouses and rural houses among vineyards. Another option is to sleep next to Montserrat and come down to Manresa for the day.
