What to see in Santa Pola

Must-sees

Santa Pola is a seafaring town in southern Alicante with one of the busiest fishing ports on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. In the very centre stands the 16th-century castle-fortress, built to defend the coast from pirate raids. Inside is the Sea Museum, with archaeological finds and fishing heritage. Nearby are the remains of the Portus Ilicitanus, the old Roman port, and the Roman House of the Palmeral.

South of the town, the Santa Pola Salt Flats Natural Park is one of the best places in the area to see flamingos and other birds, with viewpoints beside the road. Towards the cape, the lighthouse and hills give views over the bay and Tabarca island. The beaches are long and fine-sanded, such as the Gran Playa and Playa Lisa, with calm water.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours in Santa Pola are rare. When there is one, it covers the castle, the port and the centre, and you pay what you wish. The best option is the boat trip to Tabarca island, with its walled village and marine reserve, which can be done with a guided visit. Guided birdwatching walks in the salt flats are also worthwhile, as are trips to Elche, for the Palm Grove and the Misteri, and to Alicante.

How long to spend

In one day you can see the castle, the museum, the port and the salt flats. If you add Tabarca, allow two: the island deserves a full day or at least half. With three or four days you can add beach time, a walk in the hills and visits to Elche and Alicante. In summer, set off early for Tabarca, because the mid-morning boats are full.

Where to stay

The centre, between the castle and the port, is the most practical: you can walk to the beach, the Tabarca jetty and the fish restaurants. Gran Alacant, in the hills, has developments with apartments and is closer to the airport, although you will need a car. The beaches north of the town centre are a good alternative for families.
