What to see in Mieres

Must-sees

Mieres is the capital of the mining valleys of central Asturias, a few kilometres from Oviedo. Its full name, Mieres del Camín, recalls that the Camino de San Salvador, linking León with Oviedo, passes through here. In the centre, the Plaza de Requejo and nearby streets concentrate cider houses and atmosphere, and the Camposagrado palace is one of the most notable historic buildings. Around the municipality are small Romanesque churches, such as those of Uxo and La Rebollá.

The most distinctive feature is the mining heritage. In the Turón valley, the Pozu Santa Bárbara keeps its headframe and buildings, with a striking exterior painted in colours. In the same valley are the La Rebaldana adit and the Pozu Espinos, which show how work was done underground. The village of Bustiello, built by the mining company for its workers in the late 19th century, has an interpretation centre and is a curious example of workers' town planning.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Mieres. What there are, mainly in summer, are guided routes run by the town council: visits to the Pozu Santa Bárbara, walks around the town, tours of the Romanesque along the Camino, and cycling or walking outings on the greenways of former mining railways. They usually have limited places and need booking in advance. The village of Bustiello can also be visited with commentary.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the centre and a meal in the Requejo area. If you want to discover the mining heritage, give it a full day between the Turón valley and Bustiello. With a second day you can walk a greenway or climb to the Llosorio ridge, and Oviedo is close by to combine with it.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is central Mieres, near the station and the cider house area, with everything on foot. If you prefer the mountains, the Turón and Cuna-Cenera valleys have village houses and quiet rural lodgings. Oviedo, about twenty minutes away, has far more choice and is a good base for exploring the whole of central Asturias.
