What to see in Alfacar

Must-sees

Alfacar is in the Vega de Granada, about fifteen kilometres from the city and over nine hundred metres up, at the foot of the Sierra de la Alfaguara. It is famous across the province for its bread, which has Protected Geographical Indication status and is baked in dozens of ovens in the village. At the entrance is the Fuente de los Panaderos park, with a monument to a traditional bread kneader. In the centre, the 16th-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built over an earlier church.

The most moving visit is in the upper part, by the Fuente Grande, also known as Aynadamar or the Fountain of Tears for the bubbles rising from the bottom. From it flows a Zirid-era irrigation channel that centuries ago carried water to the Albaicín. Very close is the park dedicated to Federico García Lorca, with fountains and verses by the poet, who was murdered in this municipality in 1936. The village is also one of the gateways to the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or daily organised visits in Alfacar itself. The closest thing is the guided tours about Lorca and the Civil War that leave from Granada and drive to the area between Víznar and Alfacar. If you prefer to go on your own, the Fuente Grande and the park are free to visit, and in the Sierra de Huétor you can do waymarked hiking routes.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough to stroll through the village, buy bread at one of its bakeries and walk up to the Fuente Grande and the Lorca park. If you like walking, give it the whole day and add a route in the Sierra de la Alfaguara or the Sierra de Huétor. It is an easy trip from Granada, which you can combine with Víznar, the neighbouring village.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Alfacar is small and mainly rural houses and apartments, some in the upper area, quieter and closer to the hills. Being so close, most people sleep in Granada, where areas such as the Albaicín or the centre leave you less than half an hour away by car. The neighbouring villages on the slopes of the hills are another quiet option.
