What to see in Mazagón

Must-sees

Mazagón is a coastal resort split between the municipalities of Palos de la Frontera and Moguer. Its great draw is the long beaches of golden sand, backed by dunes and pine forests. To the east come sand cliffs and the Acantilado del Asperillo Natural Monument, a very undeveloped stretch. The village is quiet, with a marina and a pleasant promenade.

The most interesting sights are a few kilometres away. The Columbus sites include the Monastery of La Rábida, where Columbus sought support for his voyage, the Muelle de las Carabelas, with replicas of the three ships, and the village of Palos. In Moguer you can visit the Zenobia and Juan Ramón Jiménez House Museum and the Monastery of Santa Clara.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours as such in Mazagón. The usual format is guided visits and excursions leaving from here or from nearby villages. The classic one is the Columbus sites route, with visits to La Rábida monastery and the Muelle de las Carabelas.

The other big excursion is Doñana. National park visits are made in 4x4 vehicles with a guide and leave from visitor centres such as El Acebuche, a short drive along the coast road. There are also walking and cycling routes through the pine woods and guided birdwatching walks in the wetlands.

How long to spend

Mazagón is above all a beach destination, so the norm is to stay several days. Spend a morning on the Columbus sites, another on Moguer and a full day on Doñana and El Rocío. The rest of the time, beach and coastal walks. If you only have a weekend, prioritise Doñana.

Where to stay

The most convenient area is the village centre, near the marina and the main beach, where most bars, restaurants and shops are. If you want more calm and nature, the places to the east, by the pine woods and the parador, are more isolated and close to the cliffs. In summer book early, because demand is high.
