What to see in Cala Galdana

Must-sees

Cala Galdana is on the south coast of Menorca, in the municipality of Ferreries. It is a horseshoe-shaped bay with white sand and calm water, surrounded by pine woods and cliffs. At one end is the mouth of the Algendar gorge, one of the greenest on the island, part of which you can walk. The viewpoint above the cove gives a good overall view, especially at sunset.

The Camí de Cavalls, the path that runs around the island, starts here. To the east you can walk to Cala Mitjana and Cala Mitjaneta and, a little further, to Trebalúger. To the west, in just over an hour, you reach Macarella and Macarelleta, two of the most photographed coves in Menorca. Take water and comfortable shoes and set off early in summer, because it gets very hot.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours as such in Cala Galdana. Guided visits and trips leaving from the cove itself or nearby towns are the norm here. If you want a pay-what-you-like free walking tour, you will find them in Ciutadella and Mahón, focused on the old town, the history of each city and its harbour.

Among the paid activities, the most popular are boat trips along the south coast, which stop at coves that are hard to reach by land. Guided kayak trips, hikes along stretches of the Camí de Cavalls and visits to Talayotic sites, which are very numerous in Menorca, are also worthwhile.

How long to spend

A full day is enough to see the cove and walk to the neighbouring ones. If you have a car, three or four days using Cala Galdana as a base are ideal: one for the bay itself and Mitjana, another for Macarella, one for Ciutadella and another for Mahón or a boat trip. Spend the mornings walking and keep the middle of the day for the water and the shade.

Where to stay

Places to stay are concentrated around the bay itself, with hotels and apartments a few steps from the beach. It is the most convenient option if you want the sea and hiking without depending on the car every day. If you prefer a village atmosphere and more restaurants, Ferreries is a few minutes away and well placed in the centre of the island. Ciutadella is another alternative if you want to combine the beach with city life.
