What to see in Cangas del Narcea

Must-sees

Cangas del Narcea is the capital of the largest municipality in Asturias, in the south-west of the region on the banks of the river Narcea. In the centre of town stands the collegiate church of Santa María Magdalena, a Baroque church that presides over the town, along with several noble palaces, such as Omaña. A stroll through the Ambasaguas quarter and the shopping streets gives a good idea of the town’s character.

Close by is the monastery of Corias, known as the Escorial of Asturias for its size, now a parador with visits to its church and cloister. The area is a land of mountain vineyards, and Santiso has a Wine Museum dedicated to Cangas wine. For nature lovers, the Muniellos Integral Nature Reserve, one of the great oak forests of Europe, is part of the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Cangas del Narcea. The usual plan is to explore on your own and add specific activities: access to Muniellos is limited and requires a permit in advance, and some local wineries open to show their vineyards and offer tastings. The tourist office can advise on available routes and visits. If you are in Oviedo, there are day trips to western Asturias.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the town, the collegiate church and the Corias monastery. If you add the Wine Museum and a winery, allow a full day. Two or three days are ideal, because walks in the natural park and the visit to Muniellos take a day each, and the mountain roads here are slow. Autumn is the best time to see the forests in colour.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in the centre of town, near the collegiate church or Ambasaguas, with restaurants and services at hand. Corias, a couple of kilometres away, is a quiet alternative. If you are after nature, the rural houses in the villages put you closer to the trails, although you will need a car. Tineo, half an hour away, has a little more choice if everything is full.
