What to see in Jávea

Must-sees

Jávea, or Xàbia, has three very different areas. The historic centre, inland, keeps houses of local sandstone and the fortress-church of San Bartolomé, late Gothic and castle-like. On Saturdays there is a market and the nearby streets fill up. By the sea is the harbour district, Duanes de la Mar, with its fish market and promenade, and further south El Arenal, the most popular sandy beach.

The coastline is the main draw for visitors. Cap de Sant Antoni, with its lighthouse and viewpoint, offers a wide view of the bay. On the other side, Cap de la Nau and the coves of La Granadella and the Portitxol have crystal-clear water, ideal for snorkelling. The Montgó, a mountain protected as a natural park, dominates the landscape and offers hiking routes.

Free tours and guided visits

Tip-based free tours are rare in Jávea. The usual options are guided visits to the historic centre and, above all, coastal activities: kayak routes around the coves and caves, snorkelling trips and boat rides from the harbour. There are also guided hikes up the Montgó or along the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni, and outings to nearby towns such as Dénia.

How long to spend

In one day you can see the historic centre in the morning, have lunch at the harbour and end the afternoon at the Cap de Sant Antoni viewpoint or on El Arenal. To get to know the coves at leisure and do an activity at sea, two or three days is sensible. If you also want to climb the Montgó, set aside a whole morning and start early to avoid the heat.

Where to stay

El Arenal is the most convenient area if you are travelling as a family or want a sandy beach, restaurants and the promenade close at hand. The harbour has a more seafaring atmosphere, good food and easy access to boat trips. If you prefer local life and shops, the historic centre is quiet and well connected. Bear in mind that the southern coves are far away and a car is advisable.
