What to see in Valdemoro

Must-sees

Valdemoro lies in the south of the Community of Madrid, on the way to Aranjuez, and keeps an old town with several gems that surprise anyone expecting a commuter town. Plaza de la Constitución, with its Castilian-style arcades, is the starting point. Close by is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, whose main altarpiece brings together canvases by Francisco Bayeu, Ramón Bayeu and Francisco de Goya, an unusual combination outside the big museums.

Walking round the centre you will also find the 18th-century Baroque hermitage of the Cristo de la Salud, the Poor Clares convent and the Fuente de la Villa, with its washhouse, one of the finest Baroque fountains in the Madrid region. Valdemoro also has a long link with the Guardia Civil, which runs its cadet college here. For the countryside, the Parque Regional del Sureste is very close.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Valdemoro. Most visitors explore the historic centre on their own and ask at the tourist office about guided visits or scheduled routes. The liveliest time is the Baroque Fair, which recalls the market charter granted to the town under Philip III. For more choice, Madrid and Aranjuez have guided tours all year round.

How long to spend

Allow about three hours for the historic centre, the church and the Fuente de la Villa. If you want to walk or cycle in the Parque Regional del Sureste, add half a day. Many people pair Valdemoro with Aranjuez, a short hop on the same commuter line, to make a full day of sightseeing south of Madrid.

Where to stay

The best base is central Valdemoro, near Plaza de la Constitución, so you can do everything on foot, or next to the commuter rail station if you plan to travel by train to Madrid or Aranjuez. The hotel choice is moderate. If you cannot find a room, Aranjuez has more charming places to stay and Madrid an almost endless supply, less than an hour away by train.
