What to see in Vinaròs

Must-sees

Vinaròs is a seafaring town in northern Castellón, known for its prawns. The centre revolves around the main church of the Asunción, with a richly worked Baroque doorway, and the municipal market, where you can see the local produce. The fishing harbour and the fish market show the fleet's daily activity.

The seafront promenade links the centre with the town beaches and is the place for a sunset stroll. To the north, the coast turns rockier and small, quiet coves appear. On the outskirts, the Sant Sebastià chapel on El Puig offers views over the plain and the sea.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are infrequent in Vinaròs. The usual options are guided visits of the centre, sometimes organised by the tourist office, and trips to nearby places. From here it is easy to go to Peñíscola and its castle, to Morella inland or to the Ebro Delta, with boat trips and birdwatching routes. There are also boat trips along the coast and food routes centred on the prawn.

How long to spend

About four hours are enough for central Vinaròs: the church, the market, the harbour and a walk along the seafront, with a fish lunch. If you stay two or three days, you can alternate beach and coves with a trip to Peñíscola and another to Morella or the delta. If you coincide with carnival, the town changes completely and it pays to book well in advance to find somewhere to stay.

Where to stay

The centre and the seafront are the most convenient areas: you have restaurants, shops and the beach a step away. If you prefer peace, the north coast, with developments by the coves, is quieter, although you will need a car to get around. It is a good base if you are planning several trips around the area.
