What to see in Pollença

Must-sees

Pollença is in the north of Majorca, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana. It has two centres: the old town, inland, and Port de Pollença, on the bay. In the old town the highlights are Plaça Major, with the church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels, and the Calvari stairway, more than three hundred steps that climb between cypresses to a small chapel with views over the valley.

Nearby are the so-called Roman Bridge and the old convent of Santo Domingo, whose cloister hosts concerts in summer. In the Port, the seafront walk lined with pines is perfect for strolling. From there the road leads to Cap de Formentor, with viewpoints over the cliffs, Formentor beach and the lighthouse at the tip. Cala Sant Vicenç, with its small coves, is also very close.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Pollença. Guided visits of the old town and trips from the village or the Port are more common. If you want a pay-what-you-like free walking tour, you will have more options in Palma, less than an hour away by car, with tours of the old town and the cathedral area.

Among the paid activities, the most interesting are boat trips from the Port to Formentor and its coast, and guided hikes in the Tramuntana, such as Puig de Maria or the Boquer valley. You can also visit Alcúdia, with its wall and the Roman ruins of Pollentia, or take a trip to Lluc monastery.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the old town: a morning for the square, the Calvari and the convent. If your visit falls on a Sunday, you will see the market on the square. To get to know the area well, allow three or four days: one for the village, another for Formentor, one for the Port and its beach and another for Alcúdia or a mountain hike.

Where to stay

If you are interested in culture and a calm atmosphere, Pollença old town has rural houses and small hotels in traditional buildings, with restaurants around the square. If you prefer the beach, Port de Pollença has more hotels, a pleasant promenade and shallow water, good for children. The two are well connected by bus and road.
