What to see in Playa Blanca

Must-sees

Playa Blanca is at the southern tip of Lanzarote, facing Fuerteventura. Its promenade runs the whole length of the town’s coast and links the town beach with Marina Rubicón, a marina with shops and restaurants. Next to the marina stands the Castillo de las Coloradas, an 18th-century defence tower with good views.

What draws most people are the Papagayo beaches, a group of golden-sand coves within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, reached by track or on foot. To the west is the Pechiguera lighthouse. Very close by are the Janubio salt pans, Los Hervideros and El Golfo, with its green lagoon.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no city-style free walking tours here. The usual are guided trips leaving from the town. The most popular is the visit to Timanfaya, which usually includes the volcano route and stops at El Golfo, Los Hervideros and the Janubio salt pans, on the south-west coast.

Another common option is to take the ferry to Corralejo, in Fuerteventura, to spend the day among dunes and beaches. There are also boat or catamaran trips to Papagayo, kayak tours, try dives and trips around the north of Lanzarote with the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the town itself: a walk to Marina Rubicón and an afternoon at Papagayo. If you want to get to know the south well, spend two or three days, one of them on Timanfaya and the El Golfo coast. With four or five days you can add the north of the island and a day trip to Fuerteventura.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay near the promenade, between the town centre and Marina Rubicón, so you can walk between restaurants, shops and the beach. The marina area is a little quieter and more polished. If you travel by car and want calm, the developments higher up or to the west, towards Pechiguera, are an alternative.
