What to see in Punta Umbría

Must-sees

Punta Umbría occupies a tongue of land between the Atlantic and the Odiel estuary, and that defines its character: long beaches on one side and marshland on the other. Its origins as a holiday spot are linked to the English of the Río Tinto mining company, recalled by the Casa Museo del Ocio Inglés, which recreates one of their wooden houses. By the beach stands the Torre Umbría, a watchtower built to guard the coast.

Nature is very close. The Enebrales de Punta Umbría natural area protects a dune system with junipers and savins that you can explore on waymarked paths. On the other side, the Marismas del Odiel natural area is one of the best places in the province for birdwatching, including flamingos and spoonbills. The walk along the estuary, with the fishing port and its fish bars, rounds off the day.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Punta Umbría, so the norm is guided visits and excursions from the town. There are boat trips on the estuary and marshes, birdwatching outings in the Odiel and guided walks through the juniper woods. A highly recommended excursion is the Columbus sites: the La Rábida monastery, the Muelle de las Carabelas, Palos de la Frontera and Moguer. Day trips to Doñana and Seville are also organised from here.

How long to spend

A long weekend works well. One day for the town, the house museum, the tower and the beach. Another for nature: the juniper woods in the morning and the Odiel marshes in the afternoon, when birds are best seen. If you have a third day, spend it on the nearby Columbus sites or cross to the city of Huelva to see its Reina Victoria district.

Where to stay

The town centre, between the estuary and the beach, is the most practical area: everything is on foot, from the port and restaurants to the promenade. If you want rest, the developments towards El Portil and El Rompido are quieter and surrounded by pine woods, though you will need a car. In summer book early, as it is one of the favourite beach destinations of people from Huelva and many from Seville.
