What to see in Lebrija

Must-sees

Lebrija is in the Lower Guadalquivir, in the south of Seville province, between farmland and marshes. Its great monument is the church of Santa María de la Oliva, built over an old mosque, which blends Mudéjar, Gothic and Renaissance elements. Inside, the main altarpiece stands out, with figures by Alonso Cano. At the top of the town remain the ruins of the old castle, looking out over the plain.

Lebrija is the birthplace of Antonio de Nebrija, author of the first grammar of the Spanish language, and his figure is present in streets and squares. It is also a big name in flamenco, with a long line of singers, and every summer it holds the Caracolá Lebrijana, one of Andalusia’s most established flamenco festivals. The town’s pottery tradition and its wines, within the Jerez area, round off the visit.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or big-platform activities in Lebrija. The most practical thing is to ask at the tourist office about guided visits to the monuments and themed routes on Nebrija or flamenco. If you are in Seville or Jerez, you can get there by train in no time and organise the visit yourself.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the centre, Santa María de la Oliva and the castle. With a full day you can add a visit to a pottery workshop and a leisurely lunch. If you are into flamenco, plan your visit in summer to coincide with the Caracolá. With two days, combine it with Jerez de la Frontera or a route through the marshes.

Where to stay

Lebrija has little accommodation, with a few places in the centre, near the square and the main church, the most convenient area for getting around on foot. That is why many people stay in Jerez de la Frontera or Seville, both well connected by train and road. Utrera is another nearby alternative if you prefer a quiet town.
