What to see in Las Médulas

Must-sees

Las Médulas, in the Bierzo area, is what remains of the largest open-cast gold mine of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought down mountains using water channelled from the hills, a technique called ruina montium. The result is a landscape of reddish peaks and gullies among chestnut trees, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start in Las Médulas village, home to the visitor reception centre.

The main trails leave from the village. The Valiñas trail leads among the most striking peaks to the Cuevona and the Encantada, huge open galleries. The Orellán viewpoint offers the most complete view of the site, especially at sunset, and next to it you can explore the Orellán galleries. Lake Carucedo, formed by the mine’s debris, rounds off the visit.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no pay-what-you-like free walking tours at Las Médulas. The norm is guided walks along the site’s trails, explaining Roman mining techniques and local life, and guided visits to the Orellán galleries. Day trips from Ponferrada and León combine Las Médulas with Ponferrada’s Templar Castle or Villafranca del Bierzo.

How long to spend

A full day covers the essentials. In the morning, the visitor centre and the Valiñas trail, which takes about two hours. In the afternoon, drive up to Orellán for the galleries and the viewpoint late in the day. If you like walking, add half a day for the perimeter trail or the area around Lake Carucedo. Wear comfortable shoes, as some stretches are muddy.

Where to stay

Sleeping in Las Médulas village or Orellán lets you start walking early and see the landscape with few people around. There are rural cottages and the odd small hotel, with limited beds. Carucedo, by the lake, has a little more choice. If you prefer a town with services, Ponferrada is about 25 kilometres away and a good base for combining Las Médulas with the rest of the Bierzo.
