What to see in Isla Cristina

Must-sees

Isla Cristina is a fishing town on the western coast of Huelva, very close to Portugal. Its fishing port is one of the most important in Andalusia, and the arrival of the boats sets the rhythm of the day. The town centre is flat, quiet and easy to walk, with squares, low houses and plenty of life around fish and the canning tradition.

The beaches are the other big draw. Playa Central and La Casita Azul have wide stretches of fine sand, and to the east you reach Islantilla. Behind the coast spreads the Marismas de Isla Cristina natural area, with channels, salt pans and birds such as herons, spoonbills and flamingos. The carnival in February is one of the most popular festivals in the province.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Isla Cristina. The norm is guided visits and excursions leaving from here, such as walks in the marshes to see birds or cycling routes along the coast. At certain times of year visits to the port and fish market are also organised to show the fishing activity.

Very close is Ayamonte, with its historic centre by the Guadiana, where boat trips on the river depart. Crossing into Portugal is easy and lets you visit the Algarve in a day. To the east, the Columbus sites and Doñana are just over an hour away and are usually visited with a guide.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the town itself: a stroll round the port, the centre and a fish lunch. If you are on a beach holiday, you will usually stay several days. Set aside at least one for the marshes or Ayamonte and another to cross into Portugal. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching.

Where to stay

If you want to walk everywhere, stay in the centre, near the port and Playa Central. You will have restaurants, shops and the village atmosphere at hand. For a quieter beach holiday, the developments towards La Casita Azul or Islantilla offer apartments and hotels by the sand, although you will need a car or bike to get to the centre.
