What to see in Quintanilla del Agua

Must-sees

Quintanilla del Agua is a small village in the Arlanza area of Burgos province, very close to Lerma. Its big draw is Territorio Artlanza, a life-size Castilian village built by the sculptor Félix Yáñez over years of work. He built almost all of it with materials salvaged from old houses: adobe, beams, doors, windows and stone. Walking through it is like stepping into a main square from another era.

Inside there are streets, a recreated rural school, an open-air theatre that hosts plays in summer and a hamlet of scaled-down houses designed for children. In the village itself, the parish church and the old mill by the water deserve a look. The area is wine country, with Arlanza appellation wineries, and Lerma, with its Ducal Palace and main square, is a step away.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Quintanilla del Agua, but you can book a ticket to Territorio Artlanza, explored at your own pace in a good hour, and there are also packages combining it with other visits in the area, such as a toy museum in Lerma. If you want a guided visit of a historic town, the nearest is in Lerma, with tours of its old town and ducal quarter.

How long to spend

One or two hours are enough for Territorio Artlanza, so it is usually combined with other stops. A good day would be Artlanza in the morning and Lerma in the afternoon. If you have a weekend, add Covarrubias and the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, less than an hour away by car, which round off a route through the Arlanza very well.

Where to stay

Quintanilla del Agua has a rural house or two, one of them in an old mill, but beds are few and booking is advisable. Lerma, a few minutes away by car, is the best base in the area, with places to stay in the historic centre and around the main square. If you prefer a city, Burgos is less than an hour away and has much more choice.
