What to see in Pedrajas de San Esteban

Must-sees

Pedrajas de San Esteban is in the Tierra de Pinares of Valladolid, surrounded by stone pine and resin pine forests. It is the great centre of pine nuts in Spain: most of those sold in the country are packed here, and the village calls itself «the pine nut of Spain». The soleado is still practised, spreading the pine cones in the sun so that they open.

In the village, the church of San Esteban Protomártir and the Plaza Mayor with its town hall stand out. About three kilometres away is the hermitage of Sacedón, which holds a Gothic carving of the Virgen de Sacedón, the village's patron saint. Large stone pines grow next to it and steps lead down to a spring by the river Eresma.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Pedrajas. For families there is a ticketed activity, a route around the village in which children follow a little explorer and complete challenges along the way. To discover the surroundings, the best option is the Sendero del Ermitaño, an easy waymarked circular route linking the village with the hermitage of Sacedón through pine forest and riverside woodland.

How long to spend

An hour or two is enough for the village and the church. If you walk the Sendero del Ermitaño, about nine kilometres, allow about two more hours. With a full day you can add the family activity and visit Íscar, very close, where the remains of its castle stand. It also combines well with Portillo, known for its mantecado biscuits.

Where to stay

Pedrajas has little accommodation, with a rural house or two and simple places to stay in the village, convenient if you plan to walk in the pine forests. Íscar, a few kilometres away, has a bit more variety. If you prefer a city with more options and nightlife, Valladolid is less than an hour away by car and lets you visit on a day trip.
