What to see in Trigueros del Valle

Must-sees

Trigueros del Valle is a small village in northern Valladolid province, in the Pisuerga valley and very close to the southern branch of the Canal de Castilla. Its big draw is the 15th-century castle, which keeps the keep, several round towers and the entrance gate with the coats of arms of its former lords. Beneath the fortress are vaulted stables that are striking for their size.

Today the castle works as an enchanted castle: the sculptor Juan Villa has filled it with dragons, fantastic creatures and a collection of curiosities, with a display designed to be explored as a family. In the village, the church of San Miguel, of Romanesque origin, and the hermitage of Santa María del Castillo are worth a stop. Trigueros is within the Cigales wine area, so the landscape mixes vineyards, cereal fields and wineries.

Free tours and guided visits

Trigueros has no free walking tours. What is on offer centres on two experiences: a ticket to the enchanted castle, the village's star visit and a big hit with children, and a visit to a local winery with a wine tasting. If you fancy a walk, the towpath of the Canal de Castilla is a few kilometres away and makes a flat stroll by the water.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the castle, a stroll around the village and the church. If you add the winery visit and lunch in or around the village, allow a full day. Check the castle's opening times before you go.

Where to stay

Trigueros itself has a few rural houses, perfect for a quiet break with children or as a couple. Choice is small, so if you cannot find a room you can stay in Cigales, Cubillas de Santa Marta or Cabezón de Pisuerga, all very close. Valladolid, less than half an hour away by car, is the alternative with the most hotels and the best base if you want to combine the visit with the city.
