What to see in Priego de Córdoba

Must-sees

Priego is the capital of Córdoba’s Baroque, and you notice it as you walk. Start at the Fuente del Rey, with its 139 spouts and stepped pools, and continue to the Fuente de la Salud right beside it. Then head up to the centre to see the church of La Asunción, whose Sagrario is one of the finest Baroque works in Andalusia. Very close are the castle and the birthplace of Niceto Alcalá-Zamora, now a museum.

The Villa quarter is the most special part. It is the old core, Andalusí in origin, with narrow whitewashed streets full of flowerpots. It ends at the Balcón del Adarve, a viewpoint over the plain and the Subbética mountains. It is worth exploring slowly, first thing or in the evening, when there are fewer people and the light is softer.

Free tours and guided visits

Priego does not usually have fixed free tours like the big cities. The usual options are guided visits of the historic centre, linking the Villa quarter, the fountains and the Baroque churches, sometimes including entry to a church that only opens with a guide. Tailor-made routes are also arranged for groups.

Beyond the old town, a visit to an oil mill is worthwhile to learn about the Priego de Córdoba olive oil denomination. Another good option is a guided or independent trip into the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, with hiking routes and stops in nearby villages such as Zuheros or Carcabuey.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the town itself. Spend the morning on the Villa quarter, the Adarve and the castle, and the afternoon on the fountains, La Asunción and a museum. If you stay a second day, use it for the Subbética: a walk, an oil mill and a visit to Zuheros fit well into an unhurried day.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep in the centre, between Calle Río, the Carrera de las Monjas and the Paseo de Colombia area. From there you can walk to the Fuente del Rey, the Villa quarter and the tapas bars. If you want peace and are driving, the rural houses and farmhouses around are a good alternative for combining town and sierra.
