What to see in Socuéllamos

Must-sees

Socuéllamos is a La Mancha town in the north-east of Ciudad Real province, surrounded by vineyards and closely tied to wine. The big visit is the Torre del Vino Museum, built next to the old railway station, which explains grape growing and winemaking. Its most striking feature is the lookout tower, from which you see the town and the plain of vines to the horizon, especially as the sun goes down.

In the centre is the 16th-century church of La Asunción, whose tower had to be rebuilt after a fire in the early 20th century. Very close are the Casa de la Encomienda, linked to the Order of Santiago, and the Casa de la Inquisición, of which the doorway and a coat of arms survive. The sanctuary of the Virgen de Loreto and the Plaza de la Constitución, home to the town hall, complete the walk.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Socuéllamos. The format you will find is the guided visit of the Torre del Vino Museum, run by the museum itself, and visits to local wineries, several family-run or organic, which usually end with a tasting and require booking. If you are in a group, ask at the museum or the town hall about tours of the town.

How long to spend

The town and the Torre del Vino can be seen in a morning. If you add a winery visit with tasting, allow a relaxed full day. With two days you can visit Tomelloso, about twenty minutes away, or continue to the Lagunas de Ruidera, less than an hour away by car, to combine wine and nature.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in the centre, near the church and the square, where almost everything is on foot, or by the exits to the main roads if you are driving. Choice is limited, with few hotels and some apartments. If you cannot find a room, Tomelloso, very close, has more options and works as a base for touring the wine towns of La Mancha.
