What to see in Vilanova i la Geltrú

Must-sees

Vilanova i la Geltrú is a coastal town in the Garraf with plenty of life of its own. Its centre revolves around the Rambla Principal and the Plaça de la Vila, surrounded by 19th- and 20th-century buildings. Next to the station is the Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer, with paintings, archaeology and a historic library. Close by is the Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya, with steam locomotives in an old engine roundhouse.

In the old quarter of La Geltrú stands the castle, which now hosts exhibitions. The Casa Papiol shows how a middle-class family lived in the early 19th century. On the seafront, the old lighthouse houses the Espai Far, devoted to seafaring culture. The Far and Ribes Roges beaches sit along the promenade, close to the fishing port.

Free tours and guided visits

Some free walking tours cover the historic centre, the Rambla and the port area, explaining the town's trading past and its ties with the Americas. Departures are not always regular, so check at the tourist office. Among paid visits, the guided tours of the Casa Papiol and the Museu del Ferrocarril are worthwhile. Trips to the Penedès wineries and walks in the Parc del Garraf also start from here.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the centre, a museum and the beach. With two days you can see the museums at leisure, stroll around the port and pop over to Sitges, just a few minutes away by train. If you like wine, add a third day for the Penedès. In February carnival fills the town, so keep that in mind when planning.

Where to stay

To get around on foot, stay between the Rambla Principal and the seafront. From there you reach the station, the museums and the beaches in a few minutes. Ribes Roges is the most convenient area if you want the beach and seafront apartments. The historic centre has smaller, quieter options. The railway station links with Barcelona and Sitges, handy if you are not travelling by car.
