What to see in Espejo

Must-sees

Espejo is a village in the Campiña of Córdoba, about 36 kilometres south of the city, whose white houses spiral round a hill crowned by its castle. The late 13th-century fortress keeps a great keep and dominates a landscape of olive groves and cereal fields visible from far away.

Right next to the castle is the church of San Bartolomé, 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar and a listed monument, with a Renaissance altarpiece and a Baroque Sagrario chapel. The old town keeps noble houses, such as that of Justina Luque, and several chapels, including Santo Domingo and Santa Rita. Below the village lay the Roman city of Ucubi, which has left cisterns such as the one known as El Aljibe, on the outskirts.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Espejo, nor is it a place with frequent organised visits. The usual plan is to explore on your own, climbing the streets to the castle and the church of San Bartolomé. For information on possible heritage visits, ask at the town hall. From Córdoba there are trips through the Campiña and the Montilla-Moriles area that let you see the surroundings.

How long to spend

Espejo can be seen well in two or three hours: the climb to the castle, the church, a stroll through the old town and a stop at a viewpoint. Ideally combine it on the same day with nearby villages such as Castro del Río or Montilla, with its wineries. That way you can make a complete tour of the Campiña in a day from Córdoba.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Espejo is very limited, with the odd rural house in the village or the nearby countryside. If you want to stay here, look in the old town near the castle to enjoy the silence at night. The most practical choice is usually to stay in Córdoba, under an hour away, or in Montilla, which is close and has more options.
