What to see in Fermoselle

Must-sees

Fermoselle is in southern Zamora, in the heart of the Arribes del Duero Nature Park, near where the Tormes meets the Duero. Its historic centre is a protected heritage site, with granite houses, narrow streets and small squares. The main church is La Asunción, with Romanesque and Gothic parts. Climb to the area of the old castle, of which little remains, for views over the village and the canyons.

Fermoselle's most unusual side is underground. The village is honeycombed with hundreds of cellars carved into the rock, some connected to each other, where wine has been made and stored for centuries. Several can be visited, and some wineries produce wine under the Arribes appellation. Outside the village, the viewpoints over the Duero show granite walls plunging vertically to the river.

Free tours and guided visits

There are usually no free walking tours in Fermoselle. The most common options are guided visits to the underground cellars, often with a tasting, and guided walks of the historic centre. Nature excursions are organised in the Arribes del Duero: hikes to the viewpoints and river cruises through the Duero canyons, leaving from several jetties in the park. They're a good chance to see cliff-nesting birds.

How long to spend

The village and a cellar visit take about four or five hours. If you want to see the Duero viewpoints and do a short walk, allow a full day. With two days you can add a canyon cruise and other Arribes villages. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild temperatures and green or golden countryside.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in central Fermoselle, in the rural houses and small hotels of the historic centre, many in restored stone houses. From there you visit cellars and streets on foot and drive out to the viewpoints. If you want more choice, Zamora is about 60 kilometres away. Other Arribes villages, such as Aldeadávila, are a good base for exploring the northern part of the park.
