What to see in Sardón de Duero

Must-sees

Sardón de Duero is a wine village on the banks of the Duero, east of Valladolid, right on the wine route that follows the river towards the Ribera. The village is small and quiet, and its most notable building is the parish church of San Juan Bautista, built in stone in the 16th century. Around it, the landscape mixes vineyards, pine woods and dry farmland.

The municipality's gem is a kilometre from the village: the monastery of Santa María de Retuerta, founded in the 12th century. It keeps its church, chapter house, cloister and some very fine Romanesque apses. Today it is part of a vineyard estate, so access to the interior depends on the owners. For walking, the Camino del Berral trail starts in the village and is short and easy.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits in Sardón de Duero. The most practical approach is to plan your own route: a stroll around the village and the church, a look at the Retuerta monastery and a winery visit in the area. Wine tours leave from Valladolid that visit the Duero wineries and often stop in villages along this stretch of the river.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in an hour or two, including the walk to the monastery. If you add a winery visit, lunch and the Berral trail, allow half a day or a full day. With more time you can follow the Duero to Peñafiel, with its castle, or head back towards Tudela de Duero.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Sardón is very limited and mostly linked to luxury wine tourism. For something simpler, Tudela de Duero and Quintanilla de Onésimo are a few minutes away and have rural houses and guesthouses. Valladolid, half an hour away, is the most convenient base if you want to combine the wine route with the city.
