What to see in Los Navalmorales

Must-sees

Los Navalmorales is in the west of the province of Toledo, between La Jara and the Montes de Toledo. The town was formed in the 19th century by joining two villages separated by a stream, Navalmoral de Toledo and Navalmoral de Pusa. Its great building is the 16th-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, with three naves, a Baroque altarpiece and a 17th-century tower.

It is worth visiting the chapels, such as Los Remedios, San Antonio or San Sebastián, on a hill on the outskirts. In the centre are the six-spout fountain, the 18th-century town hall and the pillory, a symbol of its status as a town. The landscape combines olive groves, ash woods and Mediterranean forest, and Montes de Toledo Designation of Origin olive oil is one of its best-known products.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Los Navalmorales, but there is an experience closely tied to the land: a visit to a local olive estate with an oil tasting, where you learn about olive growing and how to tell the varieties apart. Otherwise the village is easy to explore on your own, and nearby you can walk or cycle through the olive groves, along the streams and past the old water mills.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the church, the chapels and the centre. Add the estate visit with tasting and make it a full day, with lunch in the village. With a weekend you can add a route through the Montes de Toledo or visit Talavera de la Reina, known for its ceramics, or other villages of La Jara.

Where to stay

The village and neighbouring towns in the area have rural houses, a good choice if you want peace and countryside. Choice is limited, so book ahead for weekends and long weekends. If you cannot find a room, Talavera de la Reina is the nearest large town, with hotels and restaurants of every kind and under an hour's drive away.
