What to see in Beget

Must-sees

Beget is a small hamlet in the municipality of Camprodon, in the Ripollès, hidden in a valley at the northern edge of the Alta Garrotxa. You reach it on a narrow, winding road, and that sense of isolation is part of its charm. The village is a cluster of stone houses with dark roofs, cobbled alleys and two medieval bridges over the stream, all very well preserved.

The main sight is the 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Cristòfol, with its multi-storey Lombard bell tower. Inside is the Majestat de Beget, a Romanesque carving of Christ crucified wearing a tunic, one of the most valuable pieces of its kind in Catalonia. Around the village, paths lead into the Alta Garrotxa, with woods, abandoned farmhouses and isolated chapels that make a walk worthwhile.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Beget. It is a very small place and the usual plan is to wander on your own, go into the church and follow a waymarked path. For information or route ideas, the Camprodon tourist office is the best starting point. Some trips around the Girona Pyrenees and the Camprodon area include Beget as a stop.

How long to spend

The village takes an hour or two, including the church and the bridges. Add a walk in the Alta Garrotxa and allow the whole day. Combine it with Camprodon and Sant Joan de les Abadesses for a two-day break in the valley. Bear in mind that the access road is slow and the car park fills up at weekends.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Beget is minimal, with the odd rural house and few beds, so book early if you want to wake up there with the village empty. The most practical base is Camprodon, with more accommodation, restaurants and services, about half an hour's drive away. Molló and the villages of the Camprodon valley are another quiet alternative, especially if you plan to combine the visit with mountain walks.
