What to see in Tapia de Casariego

Must-sees

Tapia de Casariego is a seafaring town in western Asturias, near the border with Galicia. Its centre surrounds the fishing harbour, with sloping streets and houses built by returning emigrants, known as indianos. Facing the harbour is Tapia island, joined to the mainland, with its lighthouse. The seafront walk has good views of the coast.

Tapia is known for surfing, and its main beach, Anguileiro, right by the town, is one of the key spots in Asturias. Nearby are La Paloma and Represas, and a little further east Penarronda beach. The coast is low and open, with gentle cliffs and meadows reaching down to the sea.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Tapia; guided visits and excursions are the norm. In town you can sign up for lessons at the surf schools, one of the most typical activities. Some guided walks cover the harbour and the area's indiano architecture and its link with emigration to the Americas.

There are good excursions nearby: the Castro de Coaña, a pre-Roman settlement, the Eo estuary with Castropol and Figueras, and Taramundi, with its knife-making workshops and rural architecture. Across the border in Galicia, Ribadeo and the Praia das Catedrais are close; in summer access to the beach requires booking.

How long to spend

You can see the town in a morning or an afternoon: the harbour, the island and its lighthouse, and a walk along the beaches. With two or three days you can add the Castro de Coaña, the Eo estuary and a trip to the Praia das Catedrais. If you're coming to surf, stay longer to make the most of the waves.

Where to stay

Tapia's centre, near the harbour, is the best base: restaurants, bars and the beaches are a few minutes' walk away. If you're coming to surf, the Anguileiro area puts you next to the schools. For somewhere quieter, the surrounding villages and rural houses are a good option, though you'll need a car to get around.
