What to see in Ribes de Freser

Must-sees

Ribes de Freser is the capital of the Vall de Ribes, in the Ripollès, at just over 900 metres, where three rivers meet: the Freser, the Rigard and the Segadell. It is the gateway to the Núria valley, and most visitors come to ride the rack railway. But the village deserves a stroll: Carrer de Cerdanya leads to the chapel of Sant Cristòfol, and Passeig Guimerà keeps summer villas such as the 1930s Xalet Sau.

From its medieval past survive the tower of Sant Pere castle and, up high, the remains of Segura castle. The hermitage of Sant Antoni, at over 1,200 metres, has a Baroque interior and fine views of the valley. Ribes is also a village of fountains, with a town route linking almost twenty of them, and it has small museums devoted to the festival giants and to the rack railway itself.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Ribes de Freser. The star activity is the ride on the Vall de Núria rack railway, which leaves from the village, passes Queralbs and climbs a gorge to the sanctuary at almost 2,000 metres. At the top there are waymarked trails of various levels. The village also has a via ferrata and routes on the Itinerànnia network to do on your own or with a mountain guide.

How long to spend

Set aside a whole day to go up to Núria and walk in the valley, and leave an hour or two to explore Ribes at a relaxed pace, see the fountains and the rack railway museum. With two or three days you can add a mountain hike from the sanctuary, a stop in Queralbs or a visit to Ripoll monastery. In winter, Núria works as a small ski resort.

Where to stay

Staying in central Ribes is the most practical choice: you have services, restaurants and the rack railway station at hand, and the train from Barcelona arrives here too. Queralbs, higher up, is a smaller, quieter stone village with rural cottages. If you want to wake up in the mountains, there is accommodation by the sanctuary in the Núria valley itself. Ripoll and Camprodon are alternatives with more choice.
