What to see in Caravia

Must-sees

Caravia is a small municipality in eastern Asturias, between Colunga and Ribadesella, running down from the Fito and Sueve hills to the Bay of Biscay. Its best-known image is La Espasa beach, a long stretch of golden sand at the mouth of the river of the same name, which marks the border with Colunga. Further east is the Arenal de Morís, broad and surrounded by cliffs.

Inland, on a hilltop with sea views, is the Castro de Caravia, a pre-Roman settlement excavated in the early 20th century. The municipality's villages, such as Prado and Duesos, keep hórreo granaries, stone manor houses and the odd house built by returning emigrants. The road up towards Arriondas leads to the Mirador del Fitu, from where you can see the coast and the Picos de Europa.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or guided visits in Caravia. It's a place to explore on your own, between beaches, viewpoints and country lanes. If you'd like a guided visit, the most practical option is to look in nearby towns with more on offer, such as Ribadesella or Lastres, or join an excursion along the eastern Asturian coast.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the essentials: a morning on the beach at La Espasa or Morís, the drive up to the Mirador del Fitu and a stroll through the villages. With two or three days you can hike in the Sierra del Sueve, visit the hillfort and head to Ribadesella or Lastres, a short drive away.

Where to stay

Caravia mainly has village houses, rural apartments and small hotels spread between the villages and the beach area. It's a quiet base, with the sea and the mountains a few minutes away. If you want more atmosphere and services, Ribadesella and Colunga are very close. In summer demand rises sharply, so book ahead.
