What to see in Montoro

Must-sees

Montoro overlooks a bend of the Guadalquivir in the east of Córdoba province, and its old town is a protected historic ensemble. The first thing you'll see is the Puente de las Doncellas, built in the late 15th century, which crosses the river and offers one of the best views of the town. Up top, the Gothic-Mudéjar church of San Bartolomé presides over the Plaza de España, surrounded by stately buildings.

Many of those buildings are made of molinaza, a reddish sandstone that gives Montoro a colour all its own. Walking the steep streets you'll find the Casa de las Conchas, a façade covered in seashells that surprises everyone. The municipal archaeological museum is housed in a former church. To the north begins the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Nature Park, with holm oak woods and hiking trails.

Free tours and guided visits

Montoro has several guided visit options. The most common is the tour of the historic centre, with the bridge, the Plaza de España and San Bartolomé. There's also a night tour, a route combining the walk with a wine and tapas tasting, and private visits for groups. These activities have few places, so it's best to book.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the old town and the bridge. If you want to do the night tour or have a relaxed meal, it's worth staying a night. With two days you can add a hike in the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro or visit Andújar or Córdoba, both less than an hour away.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in the old town, near the Plaza de España, to stroll at night when the town is quiet. Bear in mind that the streets are steep. Accommodation is limited; if you want nature, there are rural houses in the hills, and for more variety, Córdoba is about 45 minutes' drive away.
