What to see in Carmona

Must-sees

Carmona sits on a ridge about thirty kilometres from Seville. You enter through the Puerta de Sevilla, next to the fortress of the same name, which you can climb to see the town and the countryside. Inside the walls is Plaza de San Fernando, with houses from different periods. Close by stands the Prioral church of Santa María, built over an old mosque and with an orange-tree courtyard.

Carry on to the Puerta de Córdoba, of Roman origin, and to the Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro, now a parador, with views over the plain. Along the way you will pass convents such as Santa Clara. Outside the old town, the church of San Pedro has a tower reminiscent of Seville's Giralda. And do not miss the Roman necropolis, with tombs carved into the rock.

Free tours and guided visits

Carmona has tip-based free tours of the old town. They cover the gates, squares and main churches, and explain its Roman, Muslim and Christian past, which is a good way to understand how the town is laid out. Among the paid visits, the most recommended is the guided tour of the Roman necropolis. There are also visits to the Puerta de Sevilla fortress and convent routes. Many people come on a day trip from Seville, which usually includes the full guided walk.

How long to spend

One day is enough to see Carmona at a relaxed pace. In the morning, visit the necropolis and the Puerta de Sevilla fortress. After lunch, walk around the old town, the Prioral and the Puerta de Córdoba. If you stay the night, you can watch the sunset over the plain from the top and stroll more quietly.

Where to stay

Ideally, stay inside the walled town, near Plaza de San Fernando, so you can walk to all the monuments. There are hotels in manor houses and old palaces. If you are driving, accommodation near the Puerta de Sevilla makes access easier, because the streets in the centre are narrow.
