What to see in Gumiel de Izán

Must-sees

Gumiel de Izán is a town in the Burgos part of the Ribera del Duero, declared a historic ensemble, that keeps remains of its medieval fortress and walls. You enter through the Arco de los Mesones, one of its old gates, and soon comes the village's big surprise: the church of Santa María de la Asunción, at the top of a flight of steps. Its façade was designed as a stone altarpiece, with three tiers and three bays, and is one of the most striking in the province.

Inside the church, the parish museum holds pieces from the vanished monastery of San Pedro and other churches in the area, with medieval carvings and Hispano-Flemish panels. The Plaza Mayor has half-timbered houses, and a plaque recalls that Saint Dominic de Guzmán lived in the village as a young man with his uncle. Underground wine cellars dug centuries ago run beneath the village, and around it are hermitages and vineyards.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Gumiel de Izán, but there is one activity on offer: a visit to a Ribera del Duero winery in the municipality, with a tour of the facilities and a wine tasting. The village is easy to see on your own, and in nearby Aranda de Duero there are guided visits to the underground cellars of the town centre and other wine routes around the area.

How long to spend

Allow two or three hours for the village, the church façade and the parish museum. If you add the winery visit, give it half a day or a relaxed day including a roast lamb lunch. Over a weekend you can combine Gumiel with Aranda de Duero, Peñaranda de Duero and other Ribera villages, alternating heritage and wine without long drives.

Where to stay

Gumiel de Izán has a rural house or two and small places to stay, perfect if you want to sleep among vineyards in silence. Aranda de Duero, a few minutes away by car, is the alternative with the most hotels and restaurants, and a convenient base for exploring the Ribera. Another charming option is Peñaranda de Duero, with its arcaded square and castle, also very close.
