What to see in Malpica de Bergantiños

Must-sees

Malpica de Bergantiños is a fishing town on the Costa da Morte, in the north of A Coruña province. Its harbour is still very active and is the centre of local life: watching the boats come in and the catch being landed at the fish market is part of the visit. Next to it is the Casa del Pescador, with murals by Urbano Lugrís on the world of the sea. The Atalaia quarter, the oldest, looks out over the coast from above, with narrow alleys.

Outside the town it is worth driving up to Cabo San Adrián, with its hermitage and a viewpoint facing the Sisargas Islands, a refuge for seabirds. Inland are the Torres de Mens, a medieval fortress you can see from outside, and the Romanesque church of Santiago de Mens. The Pedra da Arca dolmen and the beaches of Beo, Seiruga and Barizo complete a very unspoilt coastline.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Malpica. The town is easy to explore on your own and the tourist office can tell you what there is in the municipality. Malpica is also the starting point of the Camiño dos Faros, the walking route that follows the Costa da Morte to Fisterra, and its first stage makes a good day hike. Day trips along the Costa da Morte leave from A Coruña and Santiago.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the harbour, the Atalaia and the town beach. If you add Cabo San Adrián, the Torres de Mens and a wild beach, allow a full day with a car. With two days you can walk a stretch of the Camiño dos Faros or visit other spots on the Costa da Morte, such as the Punta Nariga lighthouse. The weather changes quickly, so always bring something warm.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to sleep in the town itself, near the harbour or Area Maior beach, with seafood restaurants and everything close at hand. If you prefer the countryside, there are rural houses across the municipality's parishes, quieter but car-dependent. Choice is limited in summer, and Carballo, a few kilometres away, or A Coruña itself, less than an hour away, are alternatives.
