What to see in Andratx

Must-sees

Andratx, at the south-western tip of Majorca, has three sides. The town, inland, is a quiet village with stone streets, the church of Santa Maria at the top and the Castell de Son Mas, an old manor house that is now the town hall. A few kilometres away, Port d’Andratx fills an enclosed bay with a marina, a promenade and houses on the hillsides.

Further west is Sant Elm, a small coastal village with a beach and views of Sa Dragonera, the long island that is a nature park. From Sant Elm a path leads to La Trapa, a ruined Trappist monastery with panoramic views over the sea. Andratx is also the start of the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site, and the road to Estellencs and Banyalbufar has beautiful viewpoints.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are rare in Andratx. Guided trips and outdoor activities are the norm. The most interesting are boat trips from Sant Elm or Port d’Andratx to Sa Dragonera, with a walk on the island, and guided hikes to La Trapa or through the Tramuntana. There are also boat trips along the coast, kayaking and trips along the mountain road to Valldemossa.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough to see the town and the port. Two or three days are ideal. On the first, stroll around the town in the morning and spend the afternoon in Port d’Andratx. On the second, go to Sant Elm, cross to Sa Dragonera or walk to La Trapa. If you have a third day, drive along the Tramuntana coast towards Estellencs and Banyalbufar.

Where to stay

Port d’Andratx is the most practical area to stay, with restaurants, an evening atmosphere and boat trips. Sant Elm is smaller and quieter, ideal if you want the sea and hiking. The town has less choice, but lower prices and a village atmosphere. Either way, a car will be useful, because the distances between them are not comfortable on foot.
