What to see in Alhaurín de la Torre

Must-sees

Alhaurín de la Torre lies at the entrance to the Guadalhorce valley, about seventeen kilometres from Málaga, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Mijas. Its symbol is the Nasrid-era watchtower that stands at the entrance to the centre and gives the town its name. In the old town, with its streets on an ancient layout, is the neoclassical church of San Sebastián, rebuilt after a 19th-century earthquake.

Other stops are the Arcos de Zapata, remains of an 18th-century aqueduct, and the Torrijos refuge house, in the old farmstead of the Count of Mollina, where General Torrijos hid before his execution. The hermitages of El Alamillo and Santo Cristo del Cardón complete the route. But much of the charm lies in the Sierra de Mijas, with pine woods and trails climbing to peaks such as the Jabalcuza, with views over the bay of Málaga.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Alhaurín de la Torre. The activity you will find is adventure: a zip-line course in the middle of nature, ideal with friends or family. For heritage, the best option is to stroll on your own or ask at the town hall about guided visits. Being so close to Málaga and the Costa del Sol, you also have plenty of trips and free walking tours in the city within easy reach.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the centre, the tower and the Arcos de Zapata. If you add the zip line, allow half a day. With a whole day you can add a route in the Sierra de Mijas, which requires good fitness on the higher sections. It is easy to combine with Málaga or with Alhaurín el Grande, the neighbouring town, on the same trip.

Where to stay

There is accommodation in the town centre and in the developments on the slopes of the hills, with holiday houses and apartments surrounded by greenery. It is a good base if you want peace and quiet close to Málaga airport. For more choice, Málaga city, Torremolinos or Benalmádena are a short drive away and combine beaches and nightlife.
