What to see in Miraflores de la Sierra

Must-sees

Miraflores de la Sierra lies on the southern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, less than an hour from Madrid, and has long been a summer retreat. The centre revolves around the Plaza del Álamo, with the trunk of the old poplar turned into a monument and a poem by Vicente Aleixandre, who spent many summers here and dedicated some verses to it. Close by is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, whose first building dates from the 15th century. The late 18th-century Fuente Nueva, with one basin for washing and another for watering animals, and the Fuente del Cura round off a pleasant walk through the village.

The big draw is the mountains. Roads climb from the village to the Morcuera and Canencia passes, with viewpoints over the valley and walks towards La Najarra or the Cuerda Larga, one of the classic Guadarrama routes. On the outskirts, the Paseo de las Cruces is a short, flat walk.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Miraflores de la Sierra, and most people explore the village on their own, as it is small and easy to see at leisure. A guide makes most sense in the mountains: there are guided hikes in the Sierra de Guadarrama and nature outings. If you are in Madrid, you will also find day trips to the mountains that combine several villages in the valley.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in a morning: the Plaza del Álamo, the church and the fountains. If you want to walk, give it the whole day and climb La Najarra or do a stretch of the Cuerda Larga from the Morcuera. Over a weekend you can alternate a mountain route with a quiet stroll and visit neighbouring villages such as Soto del Real or Rascafría. In winter, snow can make the passes tricky.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in the centre, near the Plaza del Álamo, with bars and shops a few steps away. For peace and quiet, the rural houses and apartments in the upper areas, towards the Morcuera, are closer to the routes. Choice is limited in summer and on long weekends. Soto del Real and Manzanares el Real, a few kilometres away, are good alternatives with more options.
