What to see in Aldeadávila de la Ribera

Must-sees

Aldeadávila de la Ribera is one of the best-known villages in the Arribes del Duero, in western Salamanca province, on the border with Portugal. Here the river runs between granite walls hundreds of metres high, and the viewpoints are the main attraction. The Picón de Felipe offers one of the best views of the canyon and the dam, and has its own legend about a local who wanted to block the river to reach Portugal.

The Mirador del Fraile, above the Aldeadávila dam, lets you see one of the great hydroelectric works on the Duero up close. From the Playa del Rostro, in the municipality, river cruises run through the canyon. The paths down to the river pass among olive and almond trees and terraces, and a short distance away is the Pozo de los Humos, a spectacular waterfall between Masueco and Pereña.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Aldeadávila. The usual options are the river cruise on the Duero, an easy way to see the canyon from below, and hikes to the viewpoints, which you can do on your own following the signs. If you'd rather have company, some day trips from Salamanca combine the Arribes with other villages in the area.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the viewpoints and the village. With the cruise and lunch, allow the whole day. With two or three days you can explore the Arribes at a relaxed pace, go down to the Pozo de los Humos and visit other riverside villages. Spring, with the almond blossom and green fields, and autumn are the best seasons.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in Aldeadávila itself, one of the Arribes villages with the most services, with rural houses and guesthouses near the centre. There's also accommodation in Corporario, closer to the jetty, and in neighbouring villages such as Mieza or Masueco. If you can't find a room, Vitigudino has more on offer and is a short drive away.
