What to see in Cambre

Must-sees

Cambre is a municipality in the A Coruña area, about twelve kilometres from the city, stretching inland from the O Burgo estuary along the Mero river. Its great monument is the 12th-century church of Santa María de Cambre. It stands out for its east end with an ambulatory and chapels, more typical of a cathedral than a parish church. Inside is a water jar that tradition links to the wedding at Cana.

Next to the church, the archaeological museum holds the remains of a Roman villa. In O Temple, on the estuary shore, there's another Romanesque church and the medieval bridge of O Burgo, linked to the former presence of the Knights Templar. To the south, the Cecebre reservoir forms a very peaceful landscape of water and trees.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Cambre. What Civitatis offers is a visit to a workshop making traditional Galician products, a short guided activity where you see how they are made and finish with a tasting. For the heritage, the usual approach is to visit the church of Santa María and the archaeological museum on your own, or book a free tour in A Coruña and come over afterwards.

How long to spend

In half a day you can see the church and the museum and take a walk along the O Burgo estuary. Add an hour for the traditional products workshop. Cambre works well as a half-day trip from A Coruña, as it's little more than a quarter of an hour away.

Where to stay

Cambre has few hotels, and almost all are in the more populated areas, such as O Temple and the estuary, with good links to A Coruña. In the inland parishes you'll find a few quiet rural houses. If you want variety, stay in A Coruña and come by car or bus: you'll have the city for the evening and Cambre close at hand.
