What to see in Tolosa

Must-sees

Tolosa was the capital of Gipuzkoa for part of the 19th century and keeps a well-preserved old town beside the river Oria. Start at Plaza Euskal Herria and continue to the large church of Santa María and the town hall. The bridges over the Oria and the façades with wooden balconies complete the walk. The arcaded Plaza Berdura is another meeting point.

If you can, come on a Saturday. The weekly market is the town’s big moment: stalls of vegetables, cheeses and local produce in the squares and under the Tinglado roof by the river. Tolosa is also known for its beans, its pastries and its carnival, celebrated with gusto. Puppet lovers will find an international centre devoted to the art here.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Tolosa. The norm is guided tours of the old town and the market, often organised by the tourist office, explaining the town’s history and trading tradition. The most interesting excursions head to the Sierra de Aralar and Mount Txindoki for nature lovers, or to San Sebastián, less than half an hour away, which does have pay-what-you-like free walking tours.

How long to spend

About three hours are enough for the old town, which can stretch to half a day if you coincide with the market and stay for lunch. That is the ideal plan: a Saturday morning among the stalls and lunch in the centre. With a full day you can add the puppet centre or a short walk in the surroundings. If you want to climb Txindoki, set aside another day.

Where to stay

Sleeping in or near the old town lets you get around on foot and enjoy the evening atmosphere. Tolosa has good train links with San Sebastián, so it is a quiet and somewhat more affordable base for seeing the coast. If you prefer the mountains, the farmhouses and rural stays in the nearby valleys, on the way to Aralar, are a good alternative.
