What to see in Sant Cugat del Vallès

Must-sees

The centre of Sant Cugat revolves around its Benedictine monastery. Its Romanesque cloister is one of the most important in Catalonia, with carved capitals showing biblical scenes and plant motifs. The Gothic church has a large rose window on its façade. Inside the complex is the Museu de Sant Cugat, which tells the story of the monastery and the town.

Around the monastery is a pleasant old town of pedestrian streets, terraces and shops. It's worth seeing the Celler Cooperatiu, a modernista winery designed by Cèsar Martinell, and the Casa Aymat, a former tapestry factory. To the south begins the Collserola Nature Park, with trails for walking or cycling through woodland and views over the Vallès.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are rare in Sant Cugat. The most common options are guided visits to the monastery and its cloister, which help you read the capitals and understand monastic life. There are also guided routes around the local modernista architecture and outings into Collserola, on foot or by bike. Being so close to Barcelona, many travellers combine their visit with free tours of the Gothic Quarter or trips to Montserrat or Terrassa.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough to see the monastery, the museum and the centre. If you add the Celler Cooperatiu and a walk in Collserola, you can spend a whole day. An easy way to plan it is to start the morning in the cloister, have lunch in the centre and spend the afternoon in the nature park. If you have more time, Sant Cugat works well as a quiet base for visiting Barcelona.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is the centre, near the monastery and the train station. From there you can walk to almost everything of interest, and Barcelona is about twenty-five minutes away. The office and business park areas have hotels geared more to business travel, useful if you're driving. If you want nature, look for accommodation in the neighbourhoods closest to Collserola, such as Valldoreix or Mira-sol.
