What to see in Mazarrón

Must-sees

Mazarrón has two sides. On one hand is the town, a few kilometres inland, with its old quarter, the church of San Andrés and the remains of the Vélez castle. On the other is Puerto de Mazarrón, by the sea, with the fishing harbour, the promenade and most of the tourist life. The hills around the town bear the marks of the old mines, with reddish and ochre earth.

On the coast, the Bolnuevo erosions stand out, sandstone formations shaped by wind and rain that look like sculptures. Very close is Bolnuevo beach and, beyond it, a series of quiet coves. In the Puerto you can visit the centre devoted to the Phoenician ship found off La Isla beach, one of the oldest wrecks discovered in the western Mediterranean.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are rare here. More usual are guided visits to the mining and archaeological heritage, sometimes run by the town council, and nature activities. The bay is good for kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and diving, and there are boat trips along the coast. If you like walking, routes through the Sierra de las Moreras and towards Cabo Tiñoso offer cliffs and wide views. Cartagena, under an hour away, is a highly recommended day trip.

How long to spend

In one day you can see the town in the morning and Bolnuevo and the Puerto in the afternoon. If you are coming to enjoy the sea, three or four days is sensible, alternating beach, a water activity and a hike. Add a day if you want to go to Cartagena. In summer it gets very hot, so keep walks for early morning.

Where to stay

The best base is Puerto de Mazarrón, with the sea in front, the promenade, restaurants and services, and Bolnuevo very close. The town of Mazarrón is quieter and more authentic, but far from the beach and you will need a car. If you want complete calm, the developments near the coves are another option, especially outside high season.
