What to see in Ceuta

Must-sees

A visit to Ceuta starts at the Royal Walls, a fortified complex with a navigable moat that cuts the isthmus in two. You can walk along the ramparts and see the different periods of the defences. Very close is Plaza de África, with the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de África and the cathedral. From there runs Calle Real and Paseo del Revellín, the city’s shopping spine.

By the port is the Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo, designed by César Manrique, with saltwater pools. For views of the Strait, climb Monte Hacho, home to the hermitage of San Antonio, or go to the Isabel II viewpoint. The Arab Baths, well-preserved medieval remains, and the Museo de Ceuta deserve a stop. If you want a beach, La Ribera is right in the centre.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are less common in Ceuta than in other cities, although pay-what-you-like walks around the centre are sometimes on offer. When you find them, they usually cover the Royal Walls, Plaza de África and the city’s history, with its blend of Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu cultures.

More common are guided tours of the walls and the moat, sometimes by boat, and routes around Monte Hacho and its viewpoints. Some include a drive along the coast by car or minibus. Excursions to northern Morocco, such as Tetouan, are also organised from the city when the border crossing allows.

How long to spend

Ceuta is easily seen in one or two days. If you are coming for the day from Algeciras, the ferry takes about an hour, so you can spend the morning on the walls and Plaza de África and the afternoon on Monte Hacho and the maritime park. With two days you can add the Arab Baths, the museum and some beach time without rushing.

Where to stay

The most convenient place to sleep is the centre, near Paseo del Revellín, Plaza de los Reyes or Plaza de África. You will have the walls, the restaurants and the port, where boats leave for the mainland, within walking distance. The Marina and maritime park area is also well placed. For Monte Hacho you will need a car, taxi or bus, but the trip is short.
