What to see in Calaceite

Must-sees

Calaceite is in the Matarraña area, in eastern Teruel very close to Catalonia, and has one of the best-kept old towns in the area. Its heart is the arcaded Plaza de España, home to the Renaissance town hall of 1609, which keeps its old cells. Beside it is the Baroque church of La Asunción, with a doorway of twisted Solomonic columns visible from almost any street.

Stroll along Calle Mayor and Calle Maella, with stone mansions, wrought-iron balconies and coats of arms. Look out for the old wall gateways turned into chapels, such as the Portal de Maella and the Portal del Orta, and the Renaissance chapel of San Roque. The Juan Cabré Museum, devoted to the archaeologist born in the village, prepares you for the Iberian settlement of San Antonio, a kilometre away, with remains of houses and walls more than two thousand years old.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Calaceite, but you can book a guided walk of the old town, which explains the square, the church and the grand houses, and a few other paid activities in the village and around. If you prefer to go on your own, the centre is compact and the Iberian settlement is a short walk away.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the old town and the museum. If you add the Iberian settlement of San Antonio and an unhurried lunch, give it a full day. With two or three days you can explore the Matarraña, with Valderrobres and Cretas very close, and a route along the area's rivers.

Where to stay

The nicest option is to stay in the old town, where there are charming hotels and rural houses in restored stone buildings. From there you do everything on foot. Around the village there are masías converted into accommodation, ideal if you're driving. If you can't find a room, Valderrobres is very close and has more on offer.
