What to see in Martorell

Must-sees

Martorell is in the Baix Llobregat area, where the river Anoia joins the Llobregat, about thirty kilometres from Barcelona. Its best-known image is the Pont del Diable, a bridge of Roman origin rebuilt in medieval times, with a large pointed arch and a Roman triumphal arch at one end. It is a perfect stop for a short walk and a few photos by the river.

The old town keeps charming streets and two museums worth visiting. The Museu Vicenç Ros holds collections of ceramics and art, and L'Enrajolada, the Santacana house museum, is a unique building decorated with tiles and pieces gathered by a 19th-century collector. The town is also known for its car industry, and from here the mountain of Montserrat is very close.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Martorell. The most practical step is the tourist office, which has information on the museums and surroundings, and then exploring the Pont del Diable and the old town on your own, as distances are short. If you want a guided experience, many trips from Barcelona to Montserrat pass through the area, and you can combine both visits on the same day.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the bridge, the old town and one of the museums. Martorell works very well as a half-day stop combined with Montserrat, about twenty minutes away by car or train, or with the Penedès wineries. If you have time, spend the whole day in the area and leave the afternoon for the mountain.

Where to stay

Martorell has few hotels, mostly on the outskirts and by the motorway junctions, designed for business trips. For a more touristy atmosphere, Barcelona is less than an hour away by train and has every option imaginable. Another good choice is to sleep at Montserrat or in the villages of the Penedès, surrounded by vineyards.
