What to see in Logroño

Must-sees

The heart of Logroño is its old town. Here stand the co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, with its two Baroque towers, and Calle Portales, the liveliest street for a stroll. The churches of Santiago el Real and San Bartolomé are on the Way of St James, which enters the city over the Stone Bridge across the Ebro.

Calle Laurel and Calle San Juan are famous for their pincho bars, each with its own speciality. The Paseo del Espolón is the city centre’s great park. Close by are the Museum of La Rioja and the Revellín wall. On the banks of the Ebro, the river park and the Casa de las Ciencias are good options for a quiet afternoon.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours cover the old town, La Redonda, the Way of St James and Calle Laurel, with history and anecdotes about the city and its wine. You pay what you like at the end. There are also paid guided pincho routes explaining the local tapas culture. Winery visits are the area’s big draw, with some in the city itself and many more in the surrounding region. The most common trips go to Haro, to Laguardia, in Álava, and to the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla.

How long to spend

A day and a half is enough for Logroño. Spend a morning on the old town and La Redonda, the afternoon on the Espolón and the river, and the evening on pinchos. Add a second day to visit a winery or the museums. If you want to tour Rioja Alta and its wineries, allow three or four days.

Where to stay

The old town and the area around the Espolón are the best areas, a step from Calle Laurel, the monuments and the Way of St James. At night the pincho area is lively, so if you want quiet, choose a slightly tucked-away street. The modern centre, near the station, is also well connected and a short walk away.
