What to see in Solsona

Must-sees

Solsona is a small cathedral town, capital of the Solsonès district, with a very well-preserved old town. You enter through its old gateways and walk narrow streets of stone houses. The cathedral of Santa Maria holds the Romanesque figure of the Mare de Déu del Claustre, much venerated locally. Beside it is the bishop's palace, home to the Diocesan and District Museum, with notable Romanesque and Gothic painting.

Another curious visit is the Knife Museum, which recalls the town's long knife-making tradition. Solsona is also famous for its carnival, one of the most unusual in Catalonia, and its main fiesta with giants and traditional dances. Nearby are the Miracle sanctuary, the Port del Comte ski resort and, a few kilometres away, Cardona, with its castle and salt mountain.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Solsona. The norm is guided visits of the old town and the cathedral, organised by the tourist office on certain dates, and guided visits to the Diocesan Museum. From here, the most recommended excursion is Cardona. There you can take the guided tour of the salt mountain, which goes into the galleries of the old mine, and explore the castle and the collegiate church of Sant Vicenç.

How long to spend

For Solsona's old town, the cathedral and the Diocesan Museum you need about four or five hours. With a full day you can add the Knife Museum and a relaxed stroll. If you stay two days, spend the second in Cardona, with the salt mountain in the morning and the castle in the afternoon. In winter you can add a day's skiing at Port del Comte, and in summer a hike or two.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in Solsona's old town or very close to it. That way you can walk around at any hour, with restaurants and shops next door. The masías and rural houses in the area are a good option if you're after peace and nature, though you'll need a car. If you're coming for the carnival or to ski at Port del Comte, book well ahead, as accommodation is limited.
