What to see in Villena

Must-sees

Villena is in the Alto Vinalopó, in the north of Alicante province, at the crossroads between Valencia, Murcia and La Mancha. Above the town rises the Atalaya castle, a very well-preserved fortress of Almohad origin, with a keep visible from across the valley. At its foot begins the historic centre, with the Gothic and Renaissance church of Santiago, known for its twisted columns.

Opposite the church is the old palace that now houses the town hall, and Villena keeps the Villena Treasure, a hoard of Bronze Age gold pieces that is one of the great finds of Iberian prehistory. The Teatro Chapí, dedicated to the composer born in the town, completes the walk. The Moors and Christians festival, in early September, is the busiest event of the year.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Villena. The usual approach is to visit the castle and the historic centre on your own or on the guided visits listed at the tourist office. Around the town there are hiking routes in the hills and nearby castles, such as Biar's. From Alicante or Valencia, Villena fits into a day trip around the Vinalopó castles.

How long to spend

Allow a day for the castle, the church of Santiago, the museum with the Treasure and a stroll around the centre. With two days you can visit Biar, Sax or Elda, all very close. If you go in September during the Moors and Christians festival, the atmosphere is huge, but the town fills up and it's best to book ahead.

Where to stay

The centre, between the historic quarter and the shopping streets, is the best area for doing everything on foot. There's also accommodation by the motorway exit, more practical if you're driving and want to explore the area. If you want something more rural, Biar has houses in the village, and Elda is close by if you can't find a room.
