What to see in Cuevas de San Marcos

Must-sees

Cuevas de San Marcos is a white village in northern Málaga province, in the Nororma area, on the border with Córdoba. Its houses climb the slope of the Sierra del Camorro, a limestone massif dominating a landscape of olive groves, mostly of the Hojiblanca variety. In the centre, the church of San Marcos is the most notable monument, and the steep streets offer good views over the valley.

In the hills is the Cueva de Belda, with galleries, underground lakes and stalactites, inhabited since prehistory and with remains of burials. Very close is the Las Cruces menhir. On top of El Camorro, remains from the Andalusí period have been found, where there was a fortification. To the north, the municipality reaches the Genil valley, which here forms part of the Iznájar reservoir, a great sheet of water surrounded by olive trees.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Cuevas de San Marcos. The activity you will find is a guided hike around the village, climbing the Sierra del Camorro with views over the Iznájar reservoir, which lets you discover the nature and history of the area with a local. If you are interested in the Cueva de Belda, ask the town hall about access. A day trip from Antequera is easy to plan.

How long to spend

A couple of hours are enough to stroll around the village and see the church. If you do a route on El Camorro, allow another half day. With a full day you can add the Iznájar reservoir and the village of Iznájar, on the Córdoba side. With two days you have time to visit Rute or Antequera. In summer the middle of the day is very hot, so walk early.

Where to stay

The village has rural houses and holiday apartments, mainly in the centre, and a few restored farmhouses among olive groves in the countryside. They are a good option if you want peace and to set off walking from the door. As choice is limited, book ahead. Iznájar, across the reservoir, and Antequera, with much more variety, are the nearby alternatives.
