What to see in Espot

Must-sees

Espot is a small village in the Pallars Sobirà, at around 1,300 metres. It is the eastern gateway to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the only national park in Catalonia. The village has stone houses with slate roofs, a Romanesque bridge over the Escrita river and a real mountain feel.

The main goal is the Estany de Sant Maurici, a lake surrounded by forest beneath the peaks of Els Encantats. From there, trails lead to other lakes, such as the Estany Ratera, and to the lake viewpoint. In winter, the Espot Esquí resort draws skiers. In summer, the valley fills with hikers.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours as such in Espot. The usual format is guided excursions in the national park. Many visitors take a 4x4 taxi up to Sant Maurici lake, as access by private car is restricted. There are hikes led by mountain guides, wildlife and plant interpretation outings and, in winter, snowshoe excursions. In nearby Llavorsí and Sort, you can go rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa.

How long to spend

You need half a day to go up to the Estany de Sant Maurici and walk around the shore. If you want to hike to other lakes, allow a full day. Ideally, stay two or three days: one for Sant Maurici, another for a longer route in the park and a third for rafting or the Val d'Aran. Check the weather before setting out.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in the village itself, which has mountain hotels, apartments and rural houses. The taxis to the park leave from Espot, and restaurants and shops are within walking distance. If you can't find a room, look in other villages in the valley or in Esterri d'Àneu, a few kilometres away. In winter, some places at the ski resort are convenient for skiing.
